The Key Female Hormones : How They Affect Our Body, Mood & Health

25

When we talk about health as women, hormones are often not always fully understood. They influence how we think, feel, move, and function every single day. I believe that understanding our hormones is one of the most powerful steps we can take towards better health.

The Key Female Hormones

There are three main hormones that play a central role in women’s health: estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone. Each one has a unique role and when they are balanced, the body feels supported. When they shift, we feel the impact.

Estrogen is one of the most important hormones in the female body. It supports multiple systems and affects almost every cell. Let’s call this the Supporter.

It plays a role in:

    • Brain function and memory

    • Reducing inflammation in muscles and joints

    • Protecting the heart and blood vessels

    • Supporting mood and emotional wellbeing

Because estrogen works throughout the entire body, low levels can show up in different ways for different women, this is why symptoms can look completely different from one woman to another even when hormone levels are similar.

Progesterone is often known for its calming and soothing effects, let’s call it the Calmer. For many women, it helps to:

    • Promote relaxation

    • Support restful sleep

    • Calm the nervous system

However, hormone sensitivity varies. Some women may experience:

    • Low mood

    • Irritability

    • Emotional ups and downs

This doesn’t mean something is wrong, it highlights how uniquely our bodies respond to hormonal changes.

Testosterone is often misunderstood as a “male hormone,” but it is just as important for women. In fact, when we are younger, women actually produce more testosterone than estrogen. It is produced mainly by the ovaries and works throughout the body.

It supports:

    • Energy and motivation

    • Mental clarity and focus

    • Muscle strength

    • Bone health

When levels are low, women may notice:

    • Reduced energy

    • Difficulty concentrating

    • Low motivation

    • Decreased stamina

One of the biggest misconceptions is that hormones only affect the reproductive system. In reality, hormones influence the entire body.

For example:

    • Hormones support bladder and urinary health

    • They influence how your immune system responds

    • They affect how often you get ill

    • They play a role in long-term conditions such as heart disease and osteoporosis

Hormone health is not a small part of your wellbeing, it is central to it. When our hormones are supported:

    • We feel more like yourself

    • Our energy improves

    • Our mood stabilises

    • Our body functions more efficiently

Understanding our hormones is about awareness, the more we understand what’s happening inside our body, the more confidently we can respond to it in a way that feels simple, supportive, and empowering. I believe health starts with awareness and small, consistent steps that help us feel like ourselves again, so as i continue to learn, i invite you to come along on this journey with me so we can grow together..
